Handbagdesigner-Interview: Lolafalk

Wo kommst du her?

Was inspiriert dich und welche Materialien verwendest du?

Where are you from?
I grew up in Detroit and have lived in Dallas for the past five years. I am about to move myself (and the business) to Brooklyn this coming January.

What is the name of the label and what is the idea behind the name?
My label is named Lolafalk; it is a combination of various nicknames I've been given through the years: "Lola" from my Spanish-speaking friends, and "Falk" because my last name is Falkowski. People have always referred to me by some variation of the two - either "Lola," "Falk" or "Lola Falk." When it came time to think of a name for my label, it seemed like the most natural choice. And although my first name is Lauren, most of my customers now refer to me as Lola. I respond to either!

What is the inspiration behind your collection and what kind of materials do you use?
My overall design aesthetic is based on a love of bright colors, shiny fabrics and the desire to create handbags that satisfy my insatiable desire for all things subtly eclectic and understatedly quirky. I work primarily with satin, taffeta and cotton, and while I gravitate towards more brightly colored and quirkily-patterned fabrics, I love to challenge myself by taking what might be considered an “ugly” fabric and working it with other colors/patterns to turn it into a artful statement piece.

Since when do you run your own collection?
While I've been making my own handbags for quite some time, I officially started the Lolafalk label in May 2008.

How or why did you start designing bags?
I started designing bags based on a symptom that is fairly common among people who become fashion and accessories designers – you know what you want in an item in terms of style and design, but can’t seem to find it anywhere. Hence, out of frustration, you decide to just start making it yourself. My mom taught me some basics on the sewing machine because I wanted to make my own tote bag based on a tutorial I found online. It took one tote to make me realize that, beyond just creating funky and eclectic items for myself, I was brimming with design ideas that could be translated into a cohesive line of handbags, clutches and totes that would appeal to a larger audience.

Do you exhibit on trade fairs?
No, not yet. I am carried in a few boutiques here in the U.S. and sell primarily online.
