Where are you from? Brooklyn, New York.

What is the name of the label? Corrente

What is the idea behind the name?

Corrente is Portuguese for ‘current’. There’s no definitive meaning to the word in Portuguese. It can refer to something being new or on-trend, to a movement and direction, like a water current, or to a strong force, like an electrical current - it’s ambiguous but all the different meanings relate to the brand and our customers. Our bags are made for people who live in the moment, who are ‘current’.

What is the inspiration behind your collection?

It changes season to season. For the Fall 10 collection my main inspiration was geometry, with texture and color emphasizing the overall geometric shapes of the bags. That’s why I called it ‘Imperfect Geometry’!

Since when do you run your own collection?

Corrente was officially launched in March 2007.

How or why did you start designing bags?

I moved to New York from the West Coast in 2002, and as soon as I got here I bought a bicycle. New York is a great place for riding a bike, but trying to find a bag that was comfortable and attractive to wear on my bike wasn’t easy. My background is in fine arts and in 2005 I decided to build on that and enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology to study accessory design. I fell in love with the art of creating handbags and that was that!

Do you exhibit in trade fairs?

We have in the past but have just launched a new fully integrated e-commerce store, www.shopcorrente.com, so our main focus now is online sales! We also work with a showroom for wholesale.

What kind of materials do you use in your collection?

Corrente is an independently owned handbag label and we pride ourselves on being small, genuine and conscientious. Keeping things local is important to us so all of our handbags are made with high quality leather and materials which we source using local businesses.
